I frequently get a spinning wheel (beach ball) in Outlook 2016 for Mac. Firefox 44 for mac. I've not been able to find a fix online for the problem.

I have the same issue - currently running Outlook 365 (all latest updates as of this post) on an early 2015 MacBook Pro, now running MacOS Sierra. Interestingly, I had similar issues with previous versions of Outlook, on older operating systems, and even on my previous machine (MacBook Air). My current theory is that the spinning wheel / temporary freeze is produced by some sort of latency from the SSD in my laptops.
It's hard to pinpoint exactly what makes the freezes longer or shorter, but over the past 2 years I've dealt with this, the freezes seem to happen more when the Outlook file is larger and when there is less free space on my hard drive. I had a similar issue running Parallels - Windows would periodically freeze for a minute or so, then resume normal operation. No errors or any apparent problems I could ever find in log files, and happened through multiple reinstalls. The virtual machine is saved as a single, large pvm file, so maybe there is something about how very large files are accessed on solid state drives. Is anyone who has this problem not using an SSD?
